Blemished skincare FAQs

Blemishes have multiple contributors and a common one is excess oil production. This happens when your skin produces too much oil (sebum) and pores become clogged, leading to the formation of blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.

They can also be associated with hormonal changes, dietary and environmental factors, and not removing makeup effectively. Some medications and geneticsmay also play a role.

Several ingredients feature in skincare products for blemish-prone skin. These are commonly used to help address contributors to breakouts and help improve the look of skin texture.

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids: AHAs, such as glycolic acid and lactic acid, are water-soluble exfoliants that help remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. This can improve the texture of the skin and help keep pores from becoming clogged.
  • Salicylic Acid: This is an exfoliant that works within pores, helping to dissolve the buildup of oil and dead skin cells. Salicylic acid can also help keep pores clear and reduce the look of redness.
  • Niacinamide: A form of vitamin B3, niacinamide has skin-soothing properties that can help reduce the appearance of redness that’s sometimes associated with blemish-prone skin. It also helps reduce excess surface oil, minimize the appearance of pores, and support the skin’s barrier.
  • Sulfur: This ingredient works by absorbing excess oil + a gentle exfoliating effect. Sulfur helps reduce the look of blemishes and the occurrence of future breakouts. It’s often used in spot treatments.
  • Retinol: Retinoids are derived from Vitamin A and support natural cell turnover. They help to keep pores clear, support clearer-looking skin, and reduce the appearance of post-blemish marks.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: A key hydrating ingredient that helps maintain the skin’s moisture balance and is suitable for blemish-prone routines, which is helpful for preventing dryness and visible irritation.

Start with a gentle, non-comedogenic cleanser containing ingredients like salicylic acid to remove excess oil + impurities. After cleansing, apply a toner with niacinamide to help reduce excess surface oil and soothe the skin. For targeted care, use a serum with retinol or salicylic acid to help reduce the occurrence of blemishes and the appearance of redness.

Even if your skin is oily, a lightweight, oil-free hydrator should still be part of a blemish-prone skincare routine. Choose one with hyaluronic acid to keep your skin moisturized and designed not to clog pores. Finally, always use a sunscreen with an oil-free, non-comedogenic formula to help protect against UVA/UVB and help minimize the look of post-blemish marks and discoloration.

In the evening, cleanse your face, apply your treatment serum, and follow with a hydrator. Exfoliate two to three times a week using gentle chemical exfoliants like glycolic acid or salicylic acid. Stay consistent with this routine, as results may be gradual, but over time it can help reduce the occurrence of blemishes, help manage excess oil, and improve skin texture.

To help minimize the look of post-blemish marks, focus on gentle care and avoid picking or squeezing blemishes, as this can worsen marks. Use products with ingredients like niacinamide and vitamin C to help reduce their appearance, and always wear broad-spectrum sunscreen to help protect the skin from UVA/UVB exposure, which can worsen discolorations.

These products are primarily designed for oily skin types as they help balance excess oil, keep pores clean, and reduce the look of redness. But if you have combination skin, you can also benefit from blemish-focused products.

For dry or sensitive skin types, it’s important to choose products with gentler ingredients, such as niacinamide or sulfate-free cleansers, to help minimize irritation or excessive dryness. It’s important to patch-test new products and introduce them gradually to avoid overwhelming the skin.

These skin types can benefit from hydrating moisturizers and soothing toners alongside active blemish-focused ingredients to help maintain the skin’s balance while addressing the appearance of breakouts.

Ultimately, the key is to select the right products for your specific skin needs and concerns, as overuse or harsh ingredients can exacerbate sensitivity or dryness, even in blemish-prone skin.

The time it takes to see results can vary depending on your skin type, the severity of your blemishes, and the specific products you’re using. You may start to see improvements in about four to six weeks of consistent use and as directed.

However, stubborn blemishes may take longer to improve. It’s important to be patient, as overuse of products can irritate the skin and delay progress. For optimal results, follow a consistent skincare routine, avoid picking at blemishes, and allow the products time to work.
